Style is something that gets talked about a lot when it comes to photography and rightly so. But what if you don’t know what style you want? What if you are not sure how to describe a visual feeling or mood in words? Or perhaps you know exactly what you are looking for but have no idea where/how to get it. When it comes to booking a photographer for your wedding this truly is the holy grail of decisions so I’m going to try and shed some light for you here.
The descriptions below cover visual style ie how the photos will look, not how the photographer will work. Below each description you will find a link to a Pintrest board which will give you a good representaion of what you can expect from a photographers that describes their style this way.
Worth note most photographers do not exclusively use one style all the time, for example I tend to use an editorial appraoch for couple shots but a documentary approach during the ceremony and for any reception party shots.
01. Dark & Moody
Dark & Moody can be defined as cinematic, atmospheric, intimate and romantic. Needless to say images are often quite dark – can be colour or black and white but most photographers of thise style favour colour. Dark and moody tends to suit elopements, intimate weddings, rocky coastlines and woodland groves but there is no hard and fast rule – take a look and see what you like.
Pretty much the opposite of Dark & Moody! Light & Airy is characterised by lots of light, white tones. Images can often appear to have less colour but take on an etheral glow. Light id often very soft so less like sunlight more like a soft clean glow. This style often suits locations with lots of space so outdoor ceremonies, mountains, lakes etc but again – there are no hard and fast rules to what type of images you like so look around and discover what YOU like best.
Also referred to as Creative or Artistic, Contemporary photography is usually very unique and dynamic. Photographers use a huge variety of techniques to create dynamic, unusual one of kind images usually focused on portraits however this can also be applied to the rest of your day.
Dramatic photography is as it sounds – epic lighting, landscapes, poses – again usually focued on the couple and taking the time needed to set up those really jaw-dropping shots that look like you are starring in your own movie.
Natural photography is all about how you and your gusests look in your photographs, 100% uninterupted, relaxed, genuine emotions. Needless to say ‘effects’ are rately used, flash light is minimal if at all and you will see your entire day captured as it was and with minimal to no interruption.
Traditional photography focuses on presenting your day in an acurate, aethetically pleasing way. guests and couples are often directed to pose but generally in a very static non-creative way. Flash and additional light may be used and lists of groups, poses etc are often used to ensure everything is captured.
