Kamila & Russell 1st April 2016

It is a rare occasion indeed that something makes me want to put down my camera and watch events unfold instead of photographing them, but last night Kamila and her Father Lukasz dancing together at her wedding touched me so deeply that I did just that. After surprising his daughter with a Father of the bride speech in English (Kamila and her family are Polish) which brought a tear to more than the bride’s eye, Lukasz swept his daughter off her feet shortly after her first dance with her new husband Russell, and waltzed her round the dance floor with a grace and elegance I was truly honoured to witness.

As a bride-cum-wedding planner, Kamila held the rare but invaluable traits of attention to detail but with a laid back attitude to the day overall, this winning combination created a wonderfully warm atmosphere throughout both the ceremony and reception party. Always a fan of the more intimate wedding I was delighted to be part of this largely family affair (in both the literal and figurative sense) which saw around thirty guests from ceremony to reception sharing in Kamila and Russell’s big day.

From her navy toenails (perfectly matching her new husbands suit!) to the bouquets and button holes Kamila and Russell’s wedding was both elegant and stylish. A four-piece gospel choir provided the soundtrack and made a wonderful change from more common pre-recorded music. After the ceremony at St Matthew’s Church guests made their way to the charming Bull Hotel in Gerrard’s Cross where drinks were served before I took the opportunity to steal away the bride and groom for some portraits. Kamila’s natural beauty and ease in front of the camera perfectly complimented Russell’s laid back attitude to posed photography (often a tricky balance with wedding portraits) and their openness to my ideas made the shoot wonderfully enjoyable. Approximately halfway through the shoot we had an extra special visitor in the form of a robin – a bird with deep personal significance to Russell and his family – who happily perched and watched as he and his new wife laughed and smile so obviously and openly in love.

The wedding breakfast was served early evening and a truly beautiful white truffle cake (crafted by Russell’s own sister) stood in pride of place at the head of the room. Speeches delivered by Russell (groom), Scott (best man) and Lukasz (Father of the bride) were all met with laughter, applause and a genuine sense of love between the two merging families. Entertainment temporarily provided by Hudson and Jude, Rusell’s young nephews, who tore around the room as only young brothers can do to the delight of guests and relations alike, it was soon time for the first dance. Slow dancing to Stevie Wonder as everyone looked on Kamila and Russell only had eyes for each other.

On a personal note, this was my first shoot after having my first baby five months ago and I would like to thank Russell, Kamila and all their friends and family for welcoming me into their lives for this one special day. I often feel like part of the family myself by the end of my photoshoots having shared such a personal day and met so many of the bride and grooms relations and this was no different. A huge, heartfelt thank you to Kamila and Russell for inviting me to share this wonderful day with them, I only hope they love the photographs as much as I do.

Helen & Chris 20th June 2015

Helen and Chris were married a mere stones throw from Chris’ family home. When Helen first contacted me all I knew was that it would be in a field and there would be a marquee – it is a testament to their creativity and commitment that they pulled off such a personal, relaxed and beautiful day of celebration with family and friends. Whilst the key elements of their wedding were firmly traditional the details and personal touches were anything but and it is this attention to detail that truly made Helen and Chris’s day a delight to photograph.

After a brief ceremony in St George’s Church the bride and groom took to a striking red tandem bicycle decorated tastefully with an overflowing basket of wild flowers and ribbon as well as the traditional ‘Just Married’ sign and string of tin cans trailing behind. Helen seemed as at home cycling in a veil, wedding dress and stunning gold heels as anyone I’ve ever seen in full Lycra! For honeymoon the couple will be embarking in a tandem mini-tour so certainly begun as they meant to go on.

A short distance down the road (or through the fields if you chose the scenic route) the wedding guests found themselves at Chris’ family home behind which was situated the Marquee. Chris and Helen’s theme was ‘Beer and Bicycles’ and it was within the marquee that this concept really came to fruition. From the bike wheel table planner, with cards stuck in the spokes to the supply of on tap craft craft beers every element seeped of relaxed, bohemian and shared celebration. Helen and Chris had no top table choosing instead to sit within the rows of tables amongst their guests, friends and family all pitched in carrying supplies up and down from the main house and children played in the rolling green fields that surrounded.

Second Shooter: Annelie Eddy.
